Shawn McGuirk, LMHC is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and has a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Counseling/Psychology. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree and CAGS at Fitchburg State College, and completed his Master’s level work at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
He worked in higher education for 19 years before transitioning to do what he loves doing - counseling others. Shawn has been an individual, couples and family therapist for 10 years. He has also completed numerous trainings on personal well-being and mental health first aid. Shawn currently works full-time as a therapist for undergraduate and graduate students at Clark University in Worcester. In a spirit of empathy and ‘radical’ acceptance, Shawn utilizes combinations of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Solution-Focused Therapy, and Mindfulness techniques (as well as humor) to help adolescents and adults work through their challenges in managing anxiety, mood fluctuations, feelings of shame and guilt, and other emotional, cognitive and behavioral issues. Shawn has a special interest in working with others on how their thoughts affect their feelings and behaviors, as well as addressing existential/spiritual-related issues. When not working, Shawn is reading, getting some exercise, spending time with his 3 children, or conversing over a good cup of coffee (and his son suggested that he tell people that he knows one card trick).
