Comprehensive DBT
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) consists of four core modalities that work together to provide a comprehensive and integrated approach to therapy.
Weekly DBT Individual Therapy Sessions |
Weekly DBT Skills Group |
Individual therapy forms the foundation of DBT. In this one-on-one setting, the client and therapist work collaboratively to address specific goals and target behaviors, which are tracked on an individualized Diary Card and reviewed at the start of each session and are the basis of each session's Agenda.
Within the individual therapy process, the therapist is utilizing specific and concrete intervention strategies and behavior analyses that enhance flexible thinking, emotional experiencing, and tolerance to address all-or-nothing thinking and avoidance behaviors. DBT incorporates a structured skills training component that typically takes place in a group setting. These groups meet weekly and are designed to teach individuals the necessary skills to navigate life's challenges. The skills training modules are divided into four key areas: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Adolescent Groups also include an additional module of Walking the Middle Path.
Groups are run very much like classes, and it typically takes about a year to complete the full curriculum. Learn more about our Weekly DBT Skills Group here. |
DBT Phone Coaching |
Weekly DBT Consultation Meetings For the Therapist |
The modality of Phone Coaching is unique to DBT, in that clients can access their DBT Individual Therapist for assistance and guidance in implementing DBT Skills between scheduled sessions. Phone Coaching helps clients navigate real-time challenges, manage intense emotions, and reinforce the use of DBT skills in their daily lives. As Coaching is not a therapeutic intervention, this modality is not covered by insurance.
DBT Phone Coaching is available for clients in Stage 1 of DBT Full Protocol. Learn more about our Phone Coaching here. |
The DBT Consultation Team is a weekly meeting for the DBT Therapists; clients do not directly participate in this required component of DBT.
The Consultation Team helps therapists manage any challenges they encounter during therapy, provides guidance on treatment strategies, and ensures the therapist's adherence to the principles and techniques of DBT. The Team helps maintain the therapist's motivation, growth, and accountability. Learn more about our Weekly DBT Consultation Meetings here. |
Clients typically begin in Stage 1 of Treatment and reassess after six months. At that point, the clinician and client review treatment progress and needs to determine if Stage 1 Treatment is to be extended for another three months, or if the client has progressed to Stage 2 Treatment where Phone Coaching is no longer a required component.
